Slow Cooker French Onion Steak

Description

This slow cooker French onion steak is tender, flavorful, and perfect over mashed potatoes or rice.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs round steak
  • 1 medium yellow onion (thinly sliced)
  • 8 oz mushrooms (sliced)
  • 1 packet French onion soup mix (dry)
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 1/2 tbsp cornstarch
  • fresh parsley (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Add half of the onions and mushrooms into the bottom of a 6-quart or larger slow cooker.
  2. Season both sides of the steaks with the dry French onion soup mix and black pepper and place into the slow cooker.
  3. Add the remaining onions and mushrooms on top of the steaks.
  4. Pour the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce around the steaks (not directly on top to avoid washing off seasonings).
  5. Cover and cook on low for 7-8 hours, or until the meat is tender and cooked through.
  6. Once the cooking time is complete, prepare the thickening mixture. Add ⅓ cup of hot broth from the slow cooker into a small bowl with the cornstarch and whisk until smooth. Pour back into the crockpot and stir to combine.
  7. Cook uncovered for 15-20 minutes on high, or until the sauce has thickened to your liking. Adjust with salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot over mashed potatoes or rice.

Notes

  • For best results, make sure to season the steaks well with the soup mix and black pepper.
  • Feel free to add any additional vegetables you enjoy into the slow cooker.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.
