Description
Deliciously spooky, these Gothic Black Candy Apples are perfect for Halloween treats.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 medium apples
- 6 wooden sticks
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup light corn syrup
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 teaspoon black gel food coloring
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- Cooking spray for the baking sheet
Instructions
- Prepare the Apples:
- Wash and dry the apples thoroughly to remove any wax.
- Insert wooden sticks into the stem end of each apple.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly spray with cooking spray.
- Make the Candy Coating:
- In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves.
- Bring the mixture to a boil without stirring. Use a candy thermometer to monitor the temperature.
- Once the temperature reaches 300°F (hard crack stage), remove the saucepan from heat.
- Add Color and Flavor:
- Quickly stir in the black gel food coloring until evenly distributed.
- Add vanilla extract if using, stir to combine.
- Coat the Apples:
- Dip each apple into the candy mixture, tilting the pan to coat completely and allowing excess to drip off.
- Place the coated apples onto the prepared baking sheet to cool and harden.
- Set and Serve:
- Let the candy apples cool completely at room temperature.
- Once set, they are ready to serve or wrap for gifting.
Notes
- Ensure the apples are completely dry before dipping to help the candy adhere better.
- Use gel food coloring for a more intense color without altering the texture.
- Be cautious while working with hot sugar to prevent burns.
- For a more dramatic effect, sprinkle edible black glitter on the apples before the coating sets.
